Donkeys

  • Donkeys

There are about 100 donkeys with us, rescued mostly by the group 'Animal Rahat' from being injured on the roadsides, retired from brick kilns and from being left abandoned after construction projects have been completed. Working donkeys in India suffer from extremely heavy work and lack of sufficient veterinary facilities for their treatment. Many people who own working donkeys rely on often very harmful traditional practices, like branding with hot iron and cutting nostrils open.

Education is needed on many levels; to educate owners about proper preventative measures like tetanus vaccinations and dewormings and about better wound management and better fitting harnesses, to educate and inspire veterinarians to approach the people from working donkey communities to develop trusting relationships that would ensure timely treatment of injuries and to educate public about the fate of working donkeys – the silent sufferers behind the scenes.
